This is a great tool to use while tuning a FRT kit!
Do not have this back plate installed while using live ammunition. Using live ammunition while having this backplate installed could result in catastrophic failure….. So just don’t do it!
What an Armorer’s Plate Actually Does
An armorer’s plate (sometimes called an armorer’s backplate or inspection slide plate) replaces the factory slide backplate during disassembly and reassembly. Its purpose is simple and critical:
- Provides direct visual confirmation of striker, spacer sleeve, and spring alignment
- Prevents blind reassembly of internal slide components
- Allows verification of correct striker engagement and reset behavior
- Reduces the risk of damaged parts, inconsistent pull weight, or unsafe function
Without an armorer’s plate, the installer is effectively working blind inside the striker channel—hoping everything seats correctly instead of confirming that it did.
Hope is not a process. Verification is.
Why Engagement Matters
Glock specifies that the cruciform (sear surface on the trigger bar) must engage at least two-thirds (approximately 67%) of the striker lug for the pistol to be considered within safe specifications. Many builders and armorers prefer closer to 80% engagement for duty or carry use because it provides a good balance of safety margin and a clean break. Competition builds sometimes run slightly less engagement for a lighter feel, but anything below the minimum should be treated as unsafe for carry or defensive use.
Too much engagement can create drag on the striker lug, resulting in a gritty or heavier than necessary trigger break. Too little engagement risks the striker releasing prematurely or failing to stay properly captured. The only reliable way to see and measure this relationship is with a half-height armorer’s plate installed so you can look directly into the rear of the slide while the pistol is assembled and the action is cycled.
When You Should Use an Armorer’s Backplate
Any time you change a component that can affect the trigger system, you should verify engagement. Common situations include:
- Installing or tuning an FRT kit
- Swapping connectors, trigger springs, or trigger bars
- Polishing the cruciform, striker lug, or connector surfaces
- Fitting aftermarket trigger shoes or complete trigger systems
- Checking worn pistols that have high round counts
- Assembling or inspecting slides after cleaning or part replacement
Professional Glock armorers treat the armorer’s plate as a baseline tool rather than an optional accessory. It is the difference between guessing and knowing that the fire-control surfaces are interacting correctly.
How to Use It
The process is straightforward:
- Unload and clear the pistol completely. Remove the magazine and verify the chamber is empty.
- Field strip the slide and remove the factory rear slide cover plate.
- Install the armorer’s half plate in its place.
- Reassemble the slide onto the frame.
- Cycle the action so the striker is fully cocked and engaged.
- Look through the open portion of the plate and observe how much of the cruciform overlaps the striker lug.
- Evaluate the engagement (minimum safe is roughly two-thirds coverage). Make any necessary adjustments to the trigger bar, connector, or related parts, then re-check.
- Once satisfied, remove the armorer’s plate and reinstall the factory backplate before any live fire.
The half-height design gives you a clear window into the critical engagement area while still retaining the internal components of the slide during the inspection process.
Compatibility
This plate is designed for full-size and compact Gen 1 through Gen 5 Glock models (including common variants such as G17, G19, G22, G23, G26, G27, G34, G35, and similar). It does not fit the slimline models (43, 43X, 48) or Gen 6 pistols.
